Nigel Farage’s Reform party has just received £72 million in donations – two billionaires handing over £36 million each.

These are the biggest-ever donations to a UK political party. This is a dangerous moment where our politics could be captured for good by big money.

We now urgently need the government to stop stalling about regulating political donations, and put a cap on the amount that any individual can donate.

It also needs to get better at enforcing existing spending rules and clamping down on people trying to disguise the true source of a donation.

Every scandal over donors, gifts and favours shows the same thing: as long as there is no cap, big money will keep buying influence over the decisions that affect all of us.

Democracy belongs to us all. Our politics should not be for sale to the highest bidder.
